Slurry pump wet-end options for abrasive copper tails
High-chrome, rubber-lined or a hybrid — the deciding variable is usually particle size, not hardness.
The wet-end material question comes up on every slurry pump enquiry and it is almost always framed around how abrasive the slurry is. Abrasiveness matters, but on its own it does not select a material.
Particle size is the discriminator
Rubber linings handle fine, high-concentration slurry extremely well. The elastomer deforms elastically under fine-particle impingement and recovers. Introduce coarse particles above roughly six millimetres, or any tramp material, and the same lining is cut rather than deformed, and life collapses.
High-chrome does the opposite. It tolerates coarse material and tramp far better, and wears faster than rubber on fine, high-velocity duty.
Practical selection
- Fine tails, consistent feed, no tramp risk — rubber-lined wet end
- Coarse or variable feed, or credible tramp risk — high-chrome
- Fine duty with occasional coarse upset — high-chrome impeller in a rubber-lined casing
That third option is under-used. It accepts a slightly higher wear rate on the component that is cheapest and quickest to change, in exchange for protecting the casing, which is neither.
