What the 2026 tailings guidance means for dewatering equipment
Tighter moisture targets change the economics of filtration. Here is what that means for equipment you already own.
The direction of travel on tailings management has been clear for several years: less water in the impoundment, more water back in the process, and far more documentation about both. The 2026 guidance formalises targets that many operators were already working toward informally.
The practical consequence
Moisture targets are met by filtration, and filtration capacity is rarely the binding constraint. Cloth life, cycle time and cake release are. An operation that was comfortably meeting a 22 percent moisture target on a given cloth may find that the same cloth cannot hold a 17 percent target without cycle times that erode throughput.
The equipment answer is usually not a new press. It is cloth specification, cycle sequencing and, frequently, the condition of components nobody inventories — feed pumps, valve seats, and the manifold seals that quietly leak filtrate back into the cake.
Where to look first
- Cloth permeability trend, not cloth age — permeability tells you what the cake will actually do
- Feed pump duty stability, since variable feed pressure produces variable cake
- Manifold and diaphragm seal condition, which degrades invisibly
- Squeeze pressure hold, measured rather than assumed
